With the new Facebook Photo Gallery Upload, there is a gotcha for professional photographers.
When we see that we have the option to upload the High Resolution photos, we think, “awesome, it’ll look clearer.” Better for the client. What it doesn’t say is that any photo uploaded at High Resolution is available for download at High Resolution.
This unsuspecting photographer, probably doesn’t know that their photo is available for Download in High Resolution. I did a test download and luckily the photographer just uploaded a web resolution image. But, even a 500px x 700px image on the web will print out a fairly good 4×6″ photo. Moreover, what message does it send to a client.? In my opinion it says, “hey here is a free photo for you to print.” It says that we are giving them a high resolution image. If they try to print it out as an 8×10 and it’s blurry, are they going to come back for a “higher” resolution file from us?
So, be careful, don’t get sucked in by this feature. Luckily, it is an opt in feature. By default, the high resolution option is NOT selected when you upload images to Facebook.
